This blog post has been sitting in my drafts folder for far too long. I thought it was about time I published it.
Okay, so last year for an assignment for university I had the option to do an essay or feature story. I chose the feature story. Whether this information is necessary or not it’s up to you.
The topic I chose was how is Instagram is impacting the zero/low-waste movement? It was a requirement to interview multiple talents and so I reached out to Laura.
I’ve been following Laura on Instagram for a while now and she never fails to inspire me. If you’re interested in living a more sustainable life I’d definitely recommend you give her a follow and take a look at her website!
I honestly cannot thank Laura enough but now onto the interview!
Also, all images are from Laura’s incredible Instagram account.
Would you call yourself an Instagram influencer?
I think that is the term most commonly used, and most accurate for what I do, but I would never refer to myself as that.
When and why did you decide to live as sustainably as possible? What were the steps you took to do so?
It is hard to pinpoint when my love of the environment began, however, my journey to sustainability began as a new year’s resolution in 2018.
Why did you decide to create an Instagram account to promote a zero/low-waste lifestyle?
It was mainly an outlet to post about products I loved, or tips I had, to even snippets from my academic studies. Just a place spread information.
What kind of attitude do you believe your followers have in terms of living an eco-friendlier life?
I feel like they have a really great outlook, proving that one individual can make a huge impact!
How important is it to you to share your advice, journey, tips, fails, etc when it comes to promoting sustainability?
It is of paramount importance for me. Mainly because I believe knowledge is power, and I should share what I have learned in my academic studies, as many aren’t fortunate enough to go onto further studies, or have picked a different career but might still be interested in finding out more about living environmentally!
Do you believe that Instagram has allowed you to make a positive change?
100% – all I have to do is read messages from other people who have made amazing changes to live more environmentally!
Has Instagram helped you in living a more sustainable lifestyle?
Yes, it inspires and motivates me daily, but if nothing else it keeps me accountable!
Do you believe that Instagram makes living a sustainable lifestyle look easier than it is?
I think sustainability Instagram has the same problems that ’normal’ social media has, which is it only shows a snapshot of someone’s life, or day, and doesn’t show the true picture. I always try and post with transparency, showing my flaws and struggles, as much as my easy swaps – to show people the truth!
Has having a zero/low-waste Instagram account provided you with opportunities to work with like-minded people and brands? What have those experiences been like?
Yes, it has! It has given me a lot of reach to find businesses, big and small, to work with, and lots of similar minded people. It is amazing how many people all over the world are interested in this movement, and it is great to join forces!
Do you believe that sustainable/zero-waste/eco-friendly/slow fashion influencers play a role in helping others understand the importance of these issues and looking after our Earth?
Yes! I believe it is our job to also educate, and take time to be responsible for what we post! If we don’t spread the truth, no one will!
Looking back over this interview I understand why I chose this topic for my assignment. Instagram is a great place for inspiration but it can also get a little overwhelming. If you’re thinking of starting your own journey into living a more sustainable life I think it’s a great place to start. There are so many accounts providing tips, inspiration and tutorials.
