This was meant to go out a week ago…
I turned 19 on the 15th and I grew a little older. Another lap around the sun. In reality it didn’t phase me. I still had my aspirations and instinct to start fresh and become the me I want to be.
I think I want to become more independent in life but I’m a little nervous about it all. I don’t feel ready, but I want to be.
Anyway, I thought I’d share with you 19 things that I learned in 19 years. It’s cliche but, nonetheless, I enjoy writing these kinds of posts.
All of these are personal to me. They’re directed to my younger self and are things that I have learned about myself over the years,
1. Change can be good
Change isn’t always bad and sometimes it’s just what we need to grow.
Live, don’t just exist. Don’t be afraid to have fun doing what you enjoy doing. Do more of what you love.
3. You are worthy
No matter what. You are always worthy. Your flaws and insecurities don’t define you. They make you you.
4. Be kind to all
Always be the kindest person you can, to everyone. Don’t hold grudges and don’t be petty.
5. Express yourself
If you love art then create more of it. Just because your friends don’t have similar hobbies doesn’t mean you should stop doing them.
6. Self care is important
Take care of yourself; physically, mentally and emotionally. Don’t burn yourself out.
7. Reach out and ask for help
If you’re struggling, ask for help. It’s okay that you’re struggling. It’s okay to admit it. Don’t hide it. Forget about the stigma. There are people who understand and want to help you.
8. You have friends
Stop thinking you don’t. You have so many who care about you. You have a great group of friends. Stop overthinking. If they didn’t like you they probably wouldn’t waste their time pretending they did.
9. Prioritising yourself is important
Sometimes you need to say no and focus on yourself. Otherwise you’ll burn yourself out. Focus on yourself.
10. Focusing on your health and wellbeing is important
Self-development is great. It really helps you understand who you are. It helps you become the strongest you’ve ever been: mentally, physically and emotionally.
11. Family is important
Your family loves you. Love them back and express gratitude. You’re lucky to have them in your life.
12. Pursue your dreams
You’re a real dreamer. Pursue them. Take small steps, create goals, and work towards achieving your dreams. You’ve got this.
13. Do what you love
You love a lot of things. Do them as often as you can. Take the time out of your day. Write, paint, create, draw, read, photograph, exercise. Do one thing you love every day.
14. You like routine
You seem to thrive off of the idea of having routines in place. Especially ones that are flexible. Put them in place, build habits. This will allow you to focus on doing the things you want to and love.
15. Don’t give up
Things will get hard, but you’ve got this. Push through.
16. You feel at home exploring
Go on hikes, go on road trips, travel. You love exploring new places. You feel like yourself, especially when you’re near mountains.
17. Let it go
Whether that be you didn’t achieve something to the standard you wanted it to be at or you’re holding a grudge. Let it go.
18. Take up opportunities
Say yes to new opportunities. Sometimes a no will be needed. Keep an open mind and step out of your comfort zone. Good things will happen.
19. You are incredible
You’ve been through a lot. You’ve battled chronic fatigue, felt alone and lost, wanted to die, cried yourself to sleep, travelled to Europe to experience a panic attack, hated yourself… But yet you’re still here and you’re stronger than ever, in all aspects of your life.
So, there you have it. 19 things I learned in 19 years. I’m sure some of them will relate to you and some of them won’t. I found it easier to write when directing them back to my younger self: reflecting on past memories and experiences. I’ve grown, I’ve changed and I’m sure you have too.
